Acura All Wheel Drive Vs. Four Wheel Drive

AWD vs 4WD - What's the Difference?

When you're shopping for a new vehicle, you may become overwhelmed with all of the different features that are included in the different models on the market. A large majority of vehicles come with the option for an all-wheel drive as well as a four-wheel drive. While they may sound like they accomplish the same thing, these are actually two very different features. Let's take a look at the difference between AWD and 4WD so you know what to look for.

What is All-Wheel Drive?

When you have all-wheel drive on a vehicle, the powertrain will power both the rear wheels and the front wheels. The full-time AWD function will move the four wheels at all times. When you have a part-time AWD function, a two-wheel drive mode is featured. The switch to AWD will be made when your vehicle is in jeopardy of losing traction.

When you have an all-wheel drive, you don't need to do anything to make the system function. Your wheels react by receiving torque through a system of differentials, couplings, and clutches.

What is Four-Wheel Drive?

Large vehicles are often equipped with four-wheel drive (such as SUVs and trucks). Differentials are in place in the front of the vehicle along with the center and rear. Transfer cases and couplings will work to transfer power to your wheels.

Just as AWD comes with the full-time and part-time modes, the 4WD option works the same way. Torque is sent to all of your wheels as needed with the part-time function. Low and high drive rangers are also included through an electronically controlled lever. The low setting works for a superior high level of traction, and a high setting is for road surfaces that are just somewhat slippery.

VIDEO: The Importance of Purchasing OEM Acura Oil Filters

Acura Oil Filters

Oil filters are an integral part of your engine's health. Oil filters protect your engine from all the gunk and muck that accumulate from engine use. The filter catches these particles and keeps your engine and all its components safe from harm. Over time, a filter will become less useful and the gunk and muck may begin to make its way to sensitive engine parts, causing untold damage to the engine and taking time off your Acura's lifespan.
